The Japanese crane lives in swampy areas, rice paddies, intertidal and art areas spread throughout Japan, China, Korea in Russia. In many East Asian countries, the crane is of great cultural importance. Because the bird forms a lifelong bond with a partner, it often symbolizes loyalty and longevity. According to legends, they could live for a thousand years. Especially at weddings, the crane is therefore often depicted as a sign of happiness and marital prosperity.
