The jaguar is a carnivore. It eats mammals, reptiles, birds and fish. Relatively speaking, jaguars have the most powerful bite of all the big cats. With their strong jaws, they can even get through a turtle's shell. The jaguar is an endangered species, from South and Central America. They also lived in Iberá, in northern Argentina, where they no longer exist because humans have taken their habitat for large-scale farming. Artis is supporting a project that aims to reintroduce the jaguar to this area and make sure the locals become familiar with it. Since jaguars are the tip of the food pyramid, they have an important role. When they live in Iberá again, there will be a better balance in nature there.
