Poster of the Green Wing Macaw from ARTIS
Poster with a print of the Green Wing Macaw in ARTIS. Illustrated by illustrator Annemieke Bunjes, known for the signage in ARTIS. The poster is printed on Tintoretto paper.
The green-winged macaw lives in South America. This macaw is green, blue and red. The name of this macaw is confusing, because the wings are not that green. The wings are red at the bottom, the top is mainly blue. The wings do have a green band, which is what its name refers to. The colors red, orange and yellow are made by our own pigments. For blue there is no known coloring agent in birds, the blue color comes from very small air bubbles in the feathers. These air bubbles scatter the light in such a way that only the blue light reaches your eyes. Not a pigment color, but a structure color.
