The water in which the elephants swim is canal water from the Entrepotdok. This way ARTIS saves a lot of drinking water. Waternet and the Amstel, Gooi and Vecht water board have worked hard on the quality of canal water. Therefore, and because houseboats are increasingly connected to the sewage system, the water is clean enough for the elephants. After filtering, the water is reused several times in the water of the elephant enclosure. A water intake has been realized between the technical area of the elephant enclosure and the canal.
