Poster of an Asian elephant from ARTIS
Poster with a print of the Asian elephant with her cub in ARTIS. Illustrated by illustrator Annemieke Bunjes, known for the signage in ARTIS. The poster is printed on Tintoretto paper.
The Asian elephant lives on the edge of forests in India and Southeast Asia and can live to be about 70 years old. It only eats plant foods such as grass, bamboo, roots, bark, wood, fruits and leaves. Asian elephants are in danger of extinction. This is mainly due to people: they not only hunt and poach, they have also ensured that the habitat of the elephants is becoming smaller and more fragmented. As a result, the elephants are getting closer to people and destroying the harvest. Farmers revolt and kill elephants. ARTIS helps Awely, a French organization that works for the Asian elephant and, together with the local population, tries to ensure that humans and animals can leave each other alone.
