Collectable griffon vulture020009
ARTIS Collectable of the griffon vulture. This soft toy is 10 cm tall.
The griffon vulture lives in mountain meadows and untouched, warm regions in Southern Europe and North Africa. There are carcasses on his menu. The griffon vulture is very large; it has a wingspan of at least eight feet. It can fly up to 4.5 kilometers. From the air he searches for cadavers. A griffon vulture that has seen dead prey whizzes down at tremendous speed. ARTIS contributes to the griffon vulture breeding program. Because Griffon Vultures are scavengers, they often eat 'roadkill'; traffic victims. As a result, they sometimes become victims of an accident themselves. In 2010, five griffon vultures from a sanctuary in Spain came to ARTIS. The vultures were no longer able to fly properly due to (traffic) accidents. Two chicks were hatched in 2017. These young are now big enough and have been released in nature.
