Collectable Komodo dragon
ARTIS Collectable of the Komodo dragon. This soft toy is 10 cm tall.
The Komodo dragon is the largest lizard in the world. It is found in Indonesia on a few Lesser Sunda Islands, including Flores, Komodo and Rinca. It likes tropical savannas with tall grasses, but can also be found on beaches and dry river beds. The Komodo dragon mainly eats carrion, but also hunts large prey itself such as deer, wild boars and water buffalo. Because they live in few places, they are a vulnerable species that must be protected. They are mainly threatened because there is less and less prey, because they are hunted and because their habitat is getting smaller and smaller by humans. ARTIS supports the Wae Wuul Reserve Protection Program of the Komodo dragon in Komodo National Park. The local population is taught how to better deal with the habitat of the monitor lizards. The wildlife of the Komodo dragon and its prey is monitored.
