Poster of the Jaguar from ARTIS
Poster with a photo of the Jaguar in ARTIS. Photographed by ARTIS photographer Ronald van Weeren.
The jaguar is a carnivore. It eats mammals, reptiles, birds and fish. Relatively jaguars have the most powerful bite of all big cats. With their strong jaws, they even get through a turtle's shell. The jaguar is an endangered species, from South and Central America. They also lived in Iberá, in the north of Argentina, where they no longer exist because humans have seized their habitat for large-scale agriculture. Artis supports a project that wants to release the jaguar in this area and make the local population familiar with it. Since jaguars are the tip of the food pyramid, they have an important role. When they live in Iberá again, there will be a better balance in nature there.
