Collectable spadefoot toad
ARTIS Collectable of the garlic toad. This soft toy is 10 cm tall.
The garlic toad is one of the most endangered amphibian species in our country. The Dutch name comes from the garlic scent that comes from the skin of the toad when dangerous. The number of places in the Netherlands where the toads can live is now only a quarter of what it was in 1950, for example because the streams and rivers where they live are increasingly separated from each other. Artis, together with the RAVON Foundation (Reptile Amphibian Fish Research Netherlands), has drawn up a rescue plan for the garlic toad. In ARTIS the chains of eggs are grown to become larvae or tadpoles. RAVON ensures that the garlic toads are released as tadpoles or young toads in various places in the Netherlands.
