Collectable false gharial
ARTIS Collectable of the false gharial. This soft toy is 10 cm tall.
False gharials live near lakes, rivers and swamps. They can live up to 90 to 100 years old. With their slender mouth they cannot kill large prey. So they mainly eat fish. The False Gharial resembles a Gharial, but because it has fewer than 100 teeth in its mouth, it is considered a False Crocodile. The false gharial is an endangered species. There are less than 2,500 adult animals left in the wild, in Indonesia and Malaysia. Because there are fewer forests and swamps, and they are hunted, the species is getting worse. ARTIS supports the nature conservation project in Danau Sentarum National Park in Indonesia. Here are the largest remaining stretches of peat swamp forest where the false gharial likes to breed.
